North American songbird of the FINCH family. A crested
finch Cardinalis cardinalis of the eastern U.S. and adjacent Canada, the
southwestern U.S., and Mexico to Belize. The eastern cardinal
(Richmondena cardinalis) male is bright red with a black throat and
face; the female is greenish brown with hints of red on her wings. Both
have crests and reddish orange bills.
